CLC Volunteers and Executive Director Honored At Awards Dinner

Christine Hockin-Boyd, Executive Director of Community Lifeline Center, was chosen by the Volunteer McKinney Center to receive the “Nonprofit Leadership Award” for 2010. The award was presented at the McKinney Center’s annual volunteer appreciation event. The award was presented by La Shandra Barbarin from Medical Center of McKinney, who had the following to say about Christine :

“It has not been an easy path this past year, but Christine has endured, never losing sight of the errand. Through her efforts and leadership Community Lifeline Center and its clients will live with the finer spirit of hope and achievement.”

Following the event Christine had this to say about winning the award:

“It’s a great affirmation both from the community and other nonprofit leaders in recognizing my leadership skills especially in light of rebuilding an organization that had virtually shut down. Meaning it gave me an opportunity to demonstrate my professional skills in assessing, identifying and implementing plans for improvement including repositioning the image of Community Lifeline Center. And as a result of this recognition I hope that families, churches, community leaders, businesses, service groups, and more will come forward in demonstrating their support to our mission.”

CLC Volunteers were also honored by being nominated for the group volunteer award. Their countless hours of time spent serving the needs of the community through CLC are greatly appreciated as is the dedication shown to the organization. Volunteers are the lifeblood of any nonprofit and that is especially true at CLC.

What Community Lifeline means to Joe Acosta

Joe Acosta is a single father of two boys ages 5 and 15. He’s raised them on his own for the last eight years. 2009 was a tough year for the self-employed home remodeling and repair contractor. With little business to be had he went on food stamps to make sure his boys had food.

When he went to his local church for help, they referred him to Community Lifeline Center. While there he received financial assistance to pay for his rent and something that Joe says means even more, encouragement. He now receives regular phone calls from CLC staff asking about how he is doing and what they can do to help.

“Its very inspirational to know someone is looking out for you, that is there to talk to about what I am going through and understands how tough it is. It keeps you motivated and it encourages me to find more work.” Joe Acosta said when asked about what Community Lifeline Center meant to him

Joe says contractor work is slowly picking up and see’s 2010 as being a good year for him. He keeps his morale and mentality positive thanks to the help of Community Lifeline Center.

It’s no secret that everyone is looking for new and improved ways to maximize their hard earned money. Community Lifeline Center has partnered with McKinney Fellowship Bible Church as both a food order and pickup site. This is another expansion of programs and services to better serve our families. Please take a moment to see the different types of food boxes that can be purchased ranging from $16.00 – $35.00.

The most common food box is the “Signature Box” which has enough food to assist in feeding a family of four for a week. And in case you’re wondering there is no income level required to order. Everyone is welcome to take advantage of this great savings opportunity. To order a food box simply stop by our office Monday thru Thursday between 8:30 am – 12:00 noon or 1:00 – 2:30 pm. Food orders may be placed with cash, money orders or Lone Star cards. Or you can order online using your debit or credit card. It’s that easy.

Make plans now to ORDER and PICKUP your food box each month at Community Lifeline Center. April’s order deadline is Thursday, April 15th and pickup date is Saturday, April 24th at 9:15 am in the CLC parking lot. This months menu

Each month’s menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is all the same high quality one could purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe.

Hillcrest Christian Church Men’s Ministry Gives Their Time, Expertise and Wonderful Encouragement

How exciting to share with you the wonderful labor of love that these men provided on two work days benefiting the services CLC provides each day. These men are part of a wonderful church that faithfully give financial support each month towards CLC’s efforts in providing hope in time of need. Under the leadership of Barry Sargent (Men’s Ministry Director) and Terry Parker (Assistant Director) they organized work days benefiting Community Lifeline Center. Work projects included: electrical repair, design and build a privacy wall and hanging of white boards. Consider stopping by the CLC offices to see their wonderful handiwork.

Celebrating Easter by Serving Others

Once again Community Lifeline Center is fortunate to partner with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church Women of McKinney in providing Easter meals for residents who are in need. As in years past St. Peter’s parishioners consider sponsoring a family by providing a basket, a ham, vegetables and some small gifts to brighten Easter day for a family. Church member and event planner, Jamie St. Clair, is overseeing that many of our CLC families will be served this wonderful gift by having their Easter meal personally delivered on Saturday, April 3.

Thank you Episcopal Church Women of St. Peter’s for your graciousness and generous heart. Yes, you are a Lifeline Friend!

Announcing New Lifeline Friend — HNTB Corporation

Recently Community Lifeline Center was approached by Leadership HNTB, a relatively new leadership training program by the Plano office. It’s their goal to encourage all of its employees to become involved in the communities in which they work — a core value. The current class desires to concentrate their efforts on one deserving charity in which to have a larger impact to benefit that charity’s clients. As a result CLC was selected and wonderful conversations and planning are taking place so that HNTB employees may have opportunities to help through volunteering and fundraising efforts. Already HNTB has graciously given of their time and energy in a variety of ways by hosting a work day at the CLC offices, participating in a community wide fundraising effort (Take a Hike!) and providing Easter goodie bags to distribute to children and other family members.

What will happen next? CLC staff can only imagine as we continue to brainstorm and provide multiple venues as HNTB employees become move involved through teaching education classes, hands on projects, fundraising events and more. These are exciting days and CLC is grateful for this new corporate sponsor. Thank you HNTB!
